Eagle deck figure, U. S. Revenue Cutter “Commodore Perry,” c. 1865 – 1883. Carved by Charles J. Hamilton. “Originally gilt, this painted eagle once stood on the deck or pilot house of the USRC “Commodore Perry,” based in Erie, Pennsylvania from 1865 until 1883. Philadelphia folk artist Charles Hamilton was better known for the wooden figures he produced for tobacconists and other merchants. When the USRC “Commodore Perry” was decommissioned, the eagle was removed and stored in the Customs House, and later acquired by the Erie Eagles Club,” as explained on an informational piece at the Erie Maritime Museum.
