Larry’s Central Market 1626 Sassafras
by Christine Lorraine Morgan, Nov. 30, 2025
This mid-city landmark has been a fixture for local shoppers since the 1960s. The building, which was built in the 1890s, was there when the old Central Market was flourishing with its indoor stalls and outdoor traders.
Upon entering the store, one catches the feel of walking into another era, with mingled aromas of delicious Italian cold cuts, fresh bread and other delights.
After operating a stall out of Erie’s Central Market in the vicinity of 15th and Peach in the early 20th century, Larry Adiutori Sr. eventually invested in the 1626 Sassafras store, which is still a thriving enterprise today. Larry’s son, Larry Adiutori Jr., began working in his dad’s store after high school and eventually started to manage the operation, a job which he held ever since.
Beyond that aspect of the family business, Larry Jr.’s children/grandchildren have also worked at this enduring establishment.
Hat tip to this local business, situated in Erie’s little Italy, for enduring the decades and providing an ongoing spot for neighborhood shoppers as well as those who come from miles away to enjoy this amazing place and the warm family atmosphere within.
