This historic two-story Federal-style home was “erected of brick brought from England as ballast on a boat,” according to 1949 information from the Erie Chamber of Commerce, although there are those who find fault with that assertion.
It is the oldest building on State Street, named for Joseph Sterrett, founder of the Erie Gazette in 1820 at age 20.
Horace Greeley, founder and editor of the New York Tribune, lived here 1830-31.
