The siesta guy with the big sombrero on the El-Patio Motel’s giant sign was a sight that most local folks had caught a glimpse of at some point in Erie, PA. Located near West Lake Road and busy Peninsula Drive, this mod motel from the 1950s was an Erie landmark for over 60 years.
The top two images were captured for Googlemaps in July 2016, back when the motel was up and running. The rest of the pictures were captured in November 2016, when I noticed the motel was being demolished. Thus I parked and caught the rest of the pictures before it was gone forever.
Many Erie residents have fond memories of the El-Patio, it was a hot spot for after-prom parties, honeymooners, and fishing groups. There was a well-maintained pool on the grounds that also provided a great place for people to go during Erie’s summer months.

El-Patio Motel’s famous “Siesta Guy” sign was a colorful and compelling sight. It was a real attention-getter when it was lit up at night.

The El Patio Motel was a local fixture, located near the entrance to the popular Presque Isle State Park.

November 2016 the demolition of the El-Patio Motel is underway. The caboose-shaped red addition was the entrance to the lounge named Choo Choo’s.
