Observe this set of images showing Erie, PA schools from the late 1800s: Christine’s Chronicles

PART I – In Erie’s younger days, public schools were numbered and named. Came across pictures of the schools that were in use as of 1888 and restored/colorized them.

Here are Schools 1- 10 with addresses and names. Most of the images are from the 1888 book “Erie, Penn’a Illustrated,” #9 was captured in 2023, and #6’s image is missing. There are a total of 16, the rest will follow after more research is conducted.

School #1 ~ 3rd and French ~ 1877 ~ 5 rooms ~ 11 foot basement. Named Lafayette (possibly due to the fact that it’s near the spot where Lafayette dined while in Erie?) Colorized and restored image is from “Erie, Penn’a Illustrated” 1888

School #2 ~ Corner of 7th and Holland ~ 1858 ~ 11 rooms ~ 6 Recitation rooms. Colorized and restored image is from “Erie, Penn’a Illustrated” 1888 (other records indicate School #2 was named Jones at 150 E. 8th)

School #3 ~ 16th and Sassafras ~ 1885 ~ 6 rooms ~ 1 Recitation room ~ 10 foot basement. Named Lowell, 158 W. 16th. Colorized and restored image is from “Erie, Penn’a Illustrated” 1888

School #4 ~ W. 5th between Chestnut and Walnut ~ 1879 ~ 6 rooms ~ 1 Recitation room ~ 10 foot basement. Named Burns, 414 W. 5th. Colorized and restored image is from “Erie, Penn’a Illustrated” 1888

School #5 ~ E. 12th between Holland and German ~ 1865 ~ 2 rooms ~ 2 Recitation rooms. Named Marshall, 234 E. 12th. Colorized and restored image is from “Erie, Penn’a Illustrated” 1888

School #6 ~ 2310 Plum ~ Irving ~ built in 1897 according to Erie County Property Tax records. The building is still standing but no longer in use as a school. Image from googlemaps

School #9 ~ 2617 Peach St. ~ Franklin School on Federal Hill ~ 8 rooms ~ built in 1891 ~ still standing ~ image capture 2023.

School #10 ~ Corner of 5th and Plum ~ 4 rooms ~ 11 foot basement. Later records indicate that School #10 was Gridley at 816 Park Avenue, which is still standing and in use as a school. This restored and colorized image is from “Erie, Penn’a. Illustrated,” 1888
