Here’s another little slice of forgotten Erie County history. . .
This early 20th century postcard shows Wellsburg Park and the Little Church on the Hill (1855 – right, still standing) in “Lundys Lane, Pa.” This scene is from Route 18 just outside of Albion in western Erie County.
It also shows the long-gone Elk Creek High School on the left, which burned down in May 1944.

“Lundys Lane” refers to “Wellsburg,” a small community near Albion.
Back when most small towns had their own post offices in the mid-1800s, Wellsburg could not obtain a post office because its name was too similar to “Wellsboro,” a different town in PA. A local war hero suggested the post office be called “Lundys Lane” after a famous battle that took place during the War of 1812. His suggestion was accepted, and Wellsburg got its own post office, even though it had a different name than the town.
Although there is no longer a post office there called Lundys Lane, the name still surfaces from time to time.
Elk Creek High School is not a place that many remember in 2026, we have historic websites and social media outlets to keep our local history alive. When that school burned in 1944, the structure next door, the Little Church on the Hill, came out of it unscathed. Built in 1855, it is still standing and used as a social gathering place today.
