One of Erie’s earliest citizens, Colt founded the first organized settlement in Erie County, and named it Colt Station.
A PA Historical Museum marker offers a thumbnail sketch of Colt’s historical accomplishments:
“Judah Colt, Agent, began the first Pennsylvania Population co. development here in 1797. He set up the first organized settlement in Erie County, at the head of flatboat navigation on French Creek.”
That marker is located in Greenfield Township at the intersection of Route 89 and Station Road in Erie County, Pennsylvania.
Colt’s 1820 house, in which he entertained Marquis de LaFayette in 1825, has been restored and relocated, but it is still standing at 435 German St. in Erie.

Judah Colt’s house, built around 1820, was renovated and relocated to 435 German Street.
Here’s what the historical marker says:
“Judah Colt House c. 1820
“Hon. Judah Colt (1761-1832), one of Erie County’s earliest citizens, settled at Colt Station, 1796, as the agent for Pennsylvania Population Co., the county’s first land developer. Moved to Borough of Erie, 1804, serving as Burgess, 1813 & & 1820-21. He built this Federal style house about 1820 at the S. W. corner of E. 4th & French Sts. where he entertained Marquis de LaFayette (1757-1834) June 3, 1825, during his celebrated visit to U.S.
“Also, home to nephew, Hon. Thomas G. Colt (1805-1861), last Burgess and, in 1851, first Mayor for newly incorporated City of Erie. House moved c. 1890 to 345 E. Front St. Due to its poor condition, was dismantled and rebuilt here 2018.
“Reconstructed by Erie Insurance.”

This historical marker tell the story behind this grand old home of Colt’s, in which Lafayette partied 221 years ago.
