When’s the last time you saw a Dairy Queen sign that resembled this one? Probably not for quite awhile, considering there are very few left in the U. S.
This particular franchise is located in Lawrence Park Township, a cozy community snuggled into northern Erie County near the Lake Erie shoreline at 4219 Iroquois Avenue. It opened in about 1953, with owner Reid Woods at the helm. As it turns out, Woods offered a special treat that endeared him with locals.

“We would go up there twice a week asking Reid Woods for flubs,” said long-time Lawrence Park resident Jaye Beebe.
“What’s a flub,” inquired the interviewer.
“It was is a misshapen DQ product ~ it would fall or it would do something, but it was misshapen ~ and Reid would put it in the freezer. If you asked for a flub, you got it for free,” added Jaye.
“It was well known throughout the ‘Park that Reid Woods had flubs.”

So how is it that this Dairy Queen’s curly-Q ice cream cone sign is still there?
When this franchise was contacted to change its sign to a more modern one like everybody else, the Lawrence Park Historical Society stepped in because portions of the township are designated on the National Register of Historic Places.
Regardless of its signage, the LP Dairy Queen maintains its status as a very popular spot.
“I like going to the Dairy Queen and getting a Mini Blizzard,” said another LP resident, Anna Mae Van Dyne, about today’s DQ. She noted that she looks forward to its seasonal opening later this spring.
